the midnight hour is close at hand

The notion of a Halloween party had arrived almost immediately after the arrival of the Spellman mortuary to Darrow. Is it the most adult thing Sabrina could do with her new home? Maybe not, but it seems like the most important thing she could do.

With the help of Jules and just about anyone else she could rope into it (Marcus and Dan, most especially when it comes to the house itself), she thinks she's done it.

While the house might not be full lived-in just yet, it's certainly ready for a Halloween party. The lights are down low, with strings of skull and pumpkin lights lining the rooms and hallways, jack-o-lanterns scattered on the porch and through the house. The kitchen has been stocked with snacks and a massive cauldron of punch labelled At Your Own Risk. A mix of Darrow pop and music from what can only be other worlds pounds in the living room and seeps into the other rooms.

While the upstairs remains off-limits, the former conservatory has been turned into a Ouija board room full of believers and skeptics alike.

The real magic, however, is downstairs in the mortuary, where a pentagram has been chalked and decorated with candles. For the brave and curious, a game is offered.

Seven Minutes in Hell reads the sign, and through the night various Leviathan employees anoint the foreheads of those brave and curious folk before shutting them in the mortuary drawers for seven minutes of an all-consuming experience. Most beg to be let out early, but prizes are on hand for those who endure seven minutes.

Darkness begins to rise around the house, and with the witching hour close at hand, it's time for a Halloween party.

"Rumi! Mira!" she shouts as she darts up the block, bounding over to her friends. The coffee, forgotten, falls out of her hand well before she reaches them, all but leaping onto them as she throws her arms around both girls at once. "Oh my god, you guys are here! I was gonna look for you, but I haven't gotten that far yet, and — I am so glad to see you!"

With Zoey's arrival, all three Huntrix girls reunite.

Certainly they could have a cup of tea together at one of their places, but half the fun of dating is going out together after all, so Larita swings by the cottage with the car when she knows Greta isn't terribly busy and announces, “Darling, I'd love to take you out for tea, please tell me you'll come.”

Lari takes Greta on a date; Greta doesn’t realize it’s a date. Time to get these two on the same page!

It's a strange sensation, like a wind tunnel pulling at her. But instead of it pulling her clothes and hair and even her skin, it's pulling something else. It's like her insides are being vacuumed up.

Gwenny sags in place for a moment; she feels suddenly emptied out.

Sunday morning, there's an owl sitting on the porch railing. The cats have been staring at it all morning, and it's been staring back.

A brilliant wind whips within the hut. Without, the sea lashes against the stilts holding it aloft, and the owls circle overhead like carrion birds.

Anyone nearby enough to see the hut will see flashes — blue as midnight lightning, gold as autumn sunshine, purple as sunrise — and with each one, Macha laughs and sobs and squeals. Her jars have broken, shattered by the selkie's song, and as her emotions swirl back into her, so too does she swirl, her stone crumbling away and the magic awakening in her once more.

Macha indulges in a miserable weep afterwards, as the gravity of her feelings and her actions catch up to her. Oh, these poor people. These poor, poor souls. The damage she's done to them, taking away their emotions as she had…

But she can undo it. She will undo it.

With a golden glimmer, she takes her true form. She opens the jars — so many jars, mountains of jars — and she sails out of her hut, guiding those lost feelings back to their owners. Over her stepping stones she goes, trailing golden magical brilliance behind her. It settles over the figures within and they rouse, gasping and holding each other for the first time in… Well, who really knows?

Macha finds each and every one of the people she'd sent her owls after. Some are perfectly carved sculptures. Some are only halfway there, her magic held at bay by some beautiful power she could never know. And thank goodness for that, she thinks. Imagine the harm if she'd succeeded in her ill-begot plan.

Only once her magic has touched everyone does she wheel back to her hut. It stands alone on a stilling sea, and as she settles on the front stoop to look out at the city she'd only known for a short time, she, and it, fade from view.

She turns to leave and stops, abrupt, before she even understands what caught her attention.

A flash of familiar magenta.

Her heart in her throat, she turns her head, eyes widening with delight and relief. "Mira! Mira, Mira, oh my god," she cries out, dashing over to throw her arms around her friend. "What are you doing here? When did you get here? Is Zoey with you?"
