"How do I know what is for their better mint?" El asks, narrowing her eyes in concentration. She wants to make sure she understands. There are many things that she can understand right away, and after so many years in Darrow, nuance has finally, mostly, become one of them — but reading people and knowing what is and isn't good for them is one of the things that continues to elude her.
